In the end, through sheer drive he revolutionized an industry and put the world on wheels. Now his name is so linked with the automobile, that most people think he invented it.

Finally, the most important factor was luck. Luck gives them the opportunity, and the capitol to grasp it. Gillette wasn't doing so well, until he sold the US government to sending his razors to the front with the doughboys in WWI. Over and over luck plays in bringing funding, or a willing market, or a special opportunity.
