As people relocated to the area Ballina came to serve as a port for Casino and Lismore and the pastoral lands of the district. There was a natural progression with the timber being cut, the planting of corn and then finally the arrival of the real cash cow with the discovery of sugar cane. Soon, sugar cane was in the ascendancy and, by 1875, there were at least 75 sugar mills in operation all along the Richmond River providing a substantial payday to locals. By 1891, this had been decreased to just nine mills with the Alstonville, Rous and Broadwater mills being the biggest. At the heights of its trading prowess Ballina was home to the third busiest port in New South Wales. The river remained as the main method of transportation of sugar cane until 1974 when more up-to-date methods of transportation were introduced.
Ballina's economic activity is once again on the advance and if the current growth rate continues, its population will easily reach 46,000 in the short-term and is quickly becoming a major centre of the region. The town boasts three high schools, four primary schools, a hospital and aged care facilities.

Ballina can also take credit for some of the most spectacular surfing beaches and beautiful headlands on the east coast of Australia.
