It was Evans who named the Macquarie River in memory of Governor Lachlan Macquarie while the name Bathurst is called after Lord Bathurst who was the British secretary of state for the colonies at the time. Local Wiradjuri tribes with leaders including Windradyne initially fought the settlers until the Frontier Wars in the 1820s put an end to the battle.

It was designated the administrative centre of the western plains and a civilised colonial settlement was planned. The original settlement of Bathurst was on the east end of the river around 1816 and is in the present suburb of Kelso. 10 men were handed 50 acres (200,000 m²) of which five were men born in the colony and the remaining five were immigrants.
